The new year will mark the start of new state laws designed to reduce the number of accidents caused by distracted driving.
Beginning Friday, January 1st, Illinois joined 18 other states in enacting a ban on the sending or reading of text messages or e-mail while driving. “It will become illegal to compose, send or read text messages, instant messages and email on a cell phone or surf the internet while driving,” according to a news release from the DuPage County Sheriff’s office. The ban includes personal digital assistants and portable or mobile computers, but does not include GPS or navigation systems.
The new rules also will prohibit motorists from talking on hand-held phones while in a highway construction zone or a school zone. Hands-free devices like the Bluetooth are allowed.
Laws on driving without insurance will also be tightened. Starting Jan. 1, those found driving without insurance in accidents causing bodily harm will be charged with a Class A Misdemeanor instead of a traffic citation.
“I urge anyone who has any questions on these new traffic laws, to contact my Community Resource Unit at (630) 407-2317 so that your questions can be answered,” Sheriff Zaruba said. “These new laws are important and will make our roads safer for all motorists of DuPage County,” he continued.

Dear Friends,
With winter right around the corner, our goal is to make roads as safe as possible for our residents. You can assist in this effort.
Please do not park on the road when snow is predicted; and never shovel or plow snow from sidewalks or driveways into the street.
The Downers Grove Township Highway Department picks up Christmas trees (stripped of all trimmings), in unincorporated areas only, during the first two full weeks of January each year.
We would also like to remind residents to make sure their mailbox is in good condition. Properly installed mailboxes will withstand heavy slush discharged from a plow. The Township is not responsible for damage to mailboxes, which are improperly placed, or in a state of disrepair. However, if your mailbox meets standards and is damaged as a result of our work, you can contact the Highway Commissioner.
With everyone’s cooperation, we will provide the best job of snow and ice removal possible. Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Lawrence (Andy) Anderson
Highway Commissioner

The Downers Grove Township announces in a Press Release on Monday, August 31st, 2009 the new Township websites and what they have to offer the public. See the Press Release on Triblocal.com.
Delivering on our promise of transparency.
Today, the Downers Grove Township Government Offices announce their new, resident driven websites. The websites www.dgtownship.com, www.dgtao.com and www.dgthwy.com allow residents more access to the individual offices and case workers, as well as a simplified navigation. These changes reflect a renewed focus on a community driven government and deliver on the promise of transparency made by the Township Board.
“This spring, the new board assured residents they would focus on delivering an efficient and cost effective government to everyone,” said Township Supervisor Frank Wurster. “Our staff and board has worked diligently over the last few months to increase services while reducing costs.”
The improved websites allow residents a faster and simpler means to contact all eight elected officials and staff members. Downers Grove Township encourages everyone to visit the sites and learn more about our programs and services.
“Hopefully township residents will visit the sites and share their thoughts and concerns with us,” said Wurster. “This is an opportunity to work together and improve our offices.”
